General Information

With the inevitable expansion of policies and programs designed to abate greenhouse emissions related to the use of energy, the ability of consumers to better manage their energy use is critical. A key tool to assist consumers in this regard, as well as to enhance the overall capacity of market participants to operate and invest efficiently in energy sector infrastructure, is the availability of advanced metering.

Following a comprehensive assessment of the costs and benefits of advanced metering, the Victorian Government committed in 2006 to the accelerated deployment of advanced metering for all electricity consumers in the State, to commence shortly. All jurisdictions in Australia are now party to the development of a national framework for "smart meters", which has the potential to provide a wide range of functionalities to around 10 million customers across the nation.

The Victorian Government is pleased to support the organisers' agenda for the Conference, and looks forward to a wide range of stimulating presentations and discussions on the many and evolving aspects of metering and billing.
